Here are a few examples of the amazing dishes we had a chance to try in Japan
The first evening in Asakusa ( 浅草, 日本)
We went to the Nakamise (仲見世) to find lunch. It was difficult and scary because it was rare for me to speak to Japanese people or even order food as normally; we only speak Japanese to each other in class in Japanese so I was afraid to make any mistakes. In the end I ordered gyuudon (牛丼)
Even though this dish may appear on the surface as simplistic, the taste was simply amazing. I always long for Japanese food now. In my opinion, Japanese food highly values the subtle tastes and flavours. Also, the appearance is always as beautiful as the quality of the food.
On another occasion we went to Saizeriya (サイゼリヤ)
I tried the plate in the middle: Mentaiko Spaghetti (明太子スパゲティ). I’m afraid to say that I didn’t particularly like it that much – it was my first time trying cod roe. The main reason why I tried it was because a Japanese youtuber I regularly watch (Sharla In Japan) said everyone should try it when they have the chance. So I did! Even though it wasn’t the best experience, I’m glad I still experienced it!
The last night before our flight back to the UK we went to Shabu Shabu (しゃぶしゃぶ) !
Shabu shabu makes me miss Japan entirely. I ridiculously enjoyed this dish. Thinly sliced beef boiled in water just screams yum – especially with sesame dipping sauce!
Overall, Japan has shaped my ideology surrounding food. I always think for what is healthy but still tastes good when looking for restaurants. In the end, I always end up going to a Japanese restaurant surprisingly! It’s so addictive for all the right reasons – simply the best type of food.
